Reykjavik is Iceland's capital and easily the biggest city. Around two-thirds of Iceland's population live here and it is where most visitors like to base themselves.

There is a range of hotel accommodation available from the stylish Hilton and Radisson SAS Saga down to small charming guesthouses with home cooked food. The locals are very friendly to visitors, and most speak English.

Reykajavik is justifiably famous for its nightlife. There are great bars with cutting edge design, and on weekends parties all night. There are also many fashion boutiques and very good shopping in general.

The main thing about Reykjavick is the cuisine. Iceland is rapidly emerging as a "foodie" desination and Reykjavik's restaurants are at the forefront of this, serving up the freshest of organic ingredients. Traditional meals feature lamb and many varieties of fish but Reykjavick is also home to Japanese, Spanish and the world's most northerly Indian restaurants !

A useful thing to have is a Reykjavik Tourist Card and is good value for money if you are staying a few nights or more. This card provides free transport on city buses, free access to the city's many thermal pools and free entry to galleries, museums and the zoo. A 24hr card costs £11 and a 72hr card costs £20. It is sold at the city's Tourist Information Centre and at bus stations, in museums and at selected hotels.

Tours to "chase" the Northern Lights can easily be arranged in Reykjavik. The period for this is between December and February inclusive, the winter months when the weather is crisp and cold. The winter months get about six hours of daylight and in the suprisingly warm summer there's often a full 24 hours of daylight, with temperatures reaching the low 20C's.
